Unlocking Education in Lockdown – by Yamini Gupta

“Sab Kuch Badla Badla Sa Lagta Hai”

I was surprised when Mr. Charles Clarence, the renowned educationist and parenting mentor opened his conversation with the parents to discuss the effects of the Corona situation on Children, Parents and studies with this famous line. This session was attended by parents not only from Agra but from other cities of India also and I was honored to facilitated parents and Charles Sir.

The spread of the Corona  virus has brought quantum changes in the lives of the people the world across. The rules, the norms and the ways of doing things have seen a complete paradigm shift. Most of the people are locked out in their homes; offices, markets and educational institutions are closed indefinitely.

In such a situation the worst affected are the children. They are confined to their homes, no friends, no playing outside, no schools. Everybody at home telling them what to do and what not to. But one thing goes uninterrupted, THEIR STUDIES.

Studio Kids organized an online open house for the parents of Agra to discuss the challenges of new ways of education and the impact of this pandemic situation on the behavior of the kids. Here are some excerpts from the session where parents are asking live questions to Mr. Clarence.

Divya Awtani (Parent): Kids are not ready to study at home, they are making all sorts of alibi from headache to vomiting …. How do we make them understand that schools are running online and they have to study

Charles Sir: In India Kids are pampered a lot. How do you create discipline in house is very important. The children need to understand – number one – the value of education, number two – Talk about his classes…Make him feel special about his classes, create a prestige around the child’s studies “Wow aaj ye bataaya tha…Aaj Madam se baat hogi” Small things should become very great……If the problem persists mothers should get up in the morning and start preparing their tiffin fill up their water bottles……

Vidit Singhal (Parent): With everyone at home and no outside or professional engagement it is holiday mood at home. How do we make kids study and make them follow the study routine?

Charles Sir: Good Question! But the question is who said this is a holiday and who gave them a holiday. Please understand everything is subjective…we are talking about education and education is tutoring this place (the brain)…The education is the same in a big lavish school with lots of toys and swings and labs and a small little shack with wooden benches…everything is available on internet in multiple ways…. So the content is not a barrier in online learning…Holiday mood will never happen if you tell your child he needs to sharpen his skills. We are here in a skill based environment the child is getting molded…this training depends on the seriousness of the parents and that’s why parenting has come up in a big way….
